1. Background: During World War II, Nazi Germany occupied Norway and took control of the Vemork facility, which was part of Norsk Hydro's plant for heavy water production. Heavy water was used in German nuclear research, and Vemork was the only facility in the world producing heavy water on a larger scale.
2. Resistance Operation: Allied intelligence services discovered Nazi Germany's interest in heavy water production at Vemork, and it was decided to sabotage the facility to prevent the heavy water from falling into German hands. In the steep mountainside above Dalen lies Rui, the smallholding where the tiny sisters Ingerine and Gurine lived. They became nationally known through the book "The Rui Girls Who Came to the King."
To Rui came the Swede Johan August Schevenius in the 1860s. One warm summer day, he decided, packed his bag, and began his journey westward - towards Norway.
Johan settled here at Rui. He married twice and had several children. Six children survived. The two eldest, Ingerine (1872-1965) and Gurine (1873-1962), lived at Rui all their lives. Their siblings crossed the ocean to America to seek their fortune there.
The cabin at Rui was only 20 square meters in size, and here they grew up. Their father taught them to read and write, but they also received schooling. He subscribed to magazines and newspapers and wanted the children to follow along. When they weren't reading, they had to work - the worst thing he knew was idleness.
At Rui, they never gave up on subsistence farming and exchanged their own products with others. They usually kept 3 cows, some sheep, goats, and chickens. They grew barley, potatoes, and vegetables. They did not buy tools; everything they owned they made themselves. At Rui, they never owned a horse or carriage; they didn't see themselves affording it. Strong shoulders and hard work were their replacements. The spirit at Rui was thrift and work - from early morning to late evening. When their father died, Ingerine and Gurine continued the farm in their father's spirit.
With their small, eager, and bent bodies, they continued to mow grass and hay until they were well into their eighties. Then they both got a place at the health home in Dalen, and naturally, they got a double room. There was a common bathtub for all the residents at the health home. It made a big impression on the sisters. They had never seen anything so fine before.
But they longed to go back. From their window at the health home, they could see their farm high up in the mountains. In 1963, Gurine passed away, 90 years old. Her older sister Ingerine wept bitterly, and life lost much of its meaning. Two years later, Ingerine also died. She was 93 years old. One of the last things she said was: -Now the sun is shining on Rui!
The Rui girls are buried at Eidsborg Stave Church. Only once did they leave Rui - in 1957, they visited Oslo, with the king. They would never forget it.
